Whole-Home Surge Protection

Monsoon season puts real surges on Valley services. A panel-mounted device is the cheapest insurance in the house.

The short answer

A whole-home surge protective device installs at your main panel and clamps voltage spikes before they reach anything downstream. It is a short job — typically under half a day — and it protects the equipment that plug-in strips do not: the air conditioner, the oven, the pool equipment, and the solar inverter on your roof.

This work is performed under Arizona ROC #344757, CR-11 — Electrical — commercial & residential. Verify it.

Why this matters more with solar on the roof

A solar inverter is a substantial piece of electronics permanently tied to your service. Nearby lightning and switching surges during monsoon season are a real cause of inverter damage, and an inverter is a considerably more expensive thing to replace than a surge device.

Panel-mounted and point-of-use are not the same thing

A power strip protects what is plugged into it. It does nothing for hardwired equipment, which is most of the expensive equipment in a house. The two layers work together; the panel-mounted device is the one that is missing from nearly every home we open up.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need a permit for a whole-home surge protector?

Requirements vary by jurisdiction. We confirm for your address and handle it where one is needed.

Does this replace my power strips?

No — they are complementary. Panel-mounted handles the large incoming surge; point-of-use handles what gets past it and protects sensitive plug-in electronics.
