Battery & Energy Storage

Backup power for outages and for peak-rate hours, sized to the loads you actually need to keep running.

The short answer

A home battery does two different jobs and it is worth being clear which one you are buying: it keeps selected circuits running through an outage, and it stores energy to be used during expensive hours instead of drawn from the grid. Sizing follows from which of those matters more to you and from which circuits you want backed up.

This work is performed under Arizona ROC #344757, CR-11 — Electrical — commercial & residential. Verify it.

Whole-home versus critical loads

Backing up an entire Phoenix house — air conditioning included — takes considerably more battery than most households expect or want to pay for.

A critical-loads panel is the common answer: refrigeration, some lighting, networking, medical equipment, a few outlets, and often one air conditioning zone. We will size both and let you see the difference before you decide.

What this pairs with

Batteries are usually added alongside solar, but they do not require it — a battery on its own can still carry you through an outage and shift usage away from peak hours.

If you already have solar from an installer who has since closed, adding a battery is often the point at which the rest of the system finally gets inspected properly.

Cost

What drives the price

  • Capacity in kilowatt-hours
  • Whole-home backup versus a critical-loads subpanel
  • Whether your existing service and panel can accommodate it
  • AC-coupled retrofit onto existing solar versus a new DC-coupled system
  • Utility interconnection requirements
Needs confirming

Blackout Electric’s own current pricing replaces this section at launch. Real local numbers from the contractor doing the work beat national cost-guide ranges on credibility — published figures for panel upgrades alone vary by more than 2.5× between sources, which is precisely the gap real pricing fills.

Questions

Frequently asked

Will a battery run my air conditioning?

It can, with enough capacity and the right inverter — but cooling a Phoenix house is the largest load in it, and backing it up meaningfully takes real battery. We will show you the sizing both ways rather than assume.

Can I add a battery to solar somebody else installed?

Usually yes, via an AC-coupled retrofit. It depends on your existing inverter and how the system is wired. We will confirm on site.

Do batteries need maintenance?

Very little mechanically, but firmware, monitoring and connection checks are worth including in an annual visit — particularly on a system whose original installer no longer exists.
