A home Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized to the unit, typically 40 to 60 amps, plus enough spare capacity in your service to carry it. Whether your existing panel can take that is the whole question, and it is answerable with a load calculation before anybody quotes you hardware.

Not every EV charger install needs a panel upgrade, and being told it does without a load calculation is a reason to get another quote.
Where capacity is genuinely tight, load management hardware can sometimes let a charger share an existing service safely instead of replacing it. That is a smaller job than a service upgrade and it is worth asking about.

Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?
Sometimes, not always. It depends on your service size and existing load. A load calculation answers it properly, and where capacity is marginal, load management hardware is often a cheaper route than a full upgrade.
Can I just use the outlet in my garage?
A standard 120-volt outlet gives you Level 1 charging — roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. It works for short commutes and it is genuinely all some households need. Level 2 is the upgrade if you need a full overnight charge.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. A new 240-volt dedicated circuit is permitted and inspected work in Valley jurisdictions.
